Congrats Decider.

As for the game let me start out by saying this:

ITS A BETA NOT A DEMO. QUIT YOUR WHINING

Ok so here's my review of the Battlefield Bad Company 2 BETA, i'll try and keep it short.

First off heres my rig:
OS: Vista 32-bit
MoBo: EVGA nForce 680i
GPU: EVGA 8800 GTX @ 768MB
CPU: Intel Quad Q6700 @2.66GHz
RAM: 4GB Patriot Gaming RAM (4x1GB)
Sound: Creative SB Fatality Platinum and Logitec 5.1 speakers / Razer Megladon 7.1 Headset

Graphics

I’ve been running the beta so far on the games default graphics settings (Meduim) at 1920x1080 and have had no graphical issues (after I updated my drivers).

The game looks great on my 32" monitor, I'd say as good if not better than MW2, and thats on medium, haven't clocked my FPS yet but as I say it runs smooth even with shit blowing up all around me.

The game textures and effects also look awesome, even the skyboxes look pretty hi res.

Its a nice looking game all round

Sound

The menu music is as irritating as any other game on the market, though luckily it just take the tweak of a slider bar to turn it off.

The in game sounds however are freaking awesome, the character Voice overs are well acted and are pretty funny in most cases and usually useful i.e. spotting enemies/tanks/calling for ammo/meds, etc.

There are options to have the Russian voice overs in Russian, or in English with a Russian accent. I recommend the second cause my Russian is a little rusty!

The game SFX are loud enough to create a good atmosphere without drowning out game VoIP or the team/squad Voice over.

Controls

The controls are a great use of the familiar BF2 controls with a couple of tweaks. The commo rose has been done away with for example being replaced by a multi-function key press (default Q) being used for all commands.

See an enemy? Look at him and press q and so can the rest of your team. Need ammo? Look at your ammo guy and press q and an notification pops up on his mini-map.

Personally I think this is an improvement on the Commo rose which had to many options to use fully while under fire.

The biggest drawback is of course the lack of a prone stance but at the end of the day everyone has the same handicap so after a few games you don’t really notice.

Also as some have mentioned there isn't a leen feature, however unlike MW2 I haven't yet been in a situation where I've thought "Damn I wish I could lean." Possibly the larger map size makes it less noticeable.

Gameplay

The game play will be familiar to anyone who played BF2, anyone coming from MW2 will feel like they are playing in slow motion. Likewise, anyone coming from ArmA may find things fast paced. In my opinion the game is paced perfectly for the use of armor and infantry at the same time

The soldiers take less damage than Regular CoD and more than Hardcore CoD to use a widely understood benchmark.

Anyone screaming that it takes a full clip to kill someone (I've been guilty of this in a weaker moment of trying to shoot a guy, while standing up, going full auto on an LMG) needs to;
A. Aim better
B. stop holding down the fire key till the clip is empty.

As in BF2 bullet drop is present but in most cases you only need to take it into account if trying for a Headshot of shooting over insane distances.

Ground Vehicles control well and are balanced enough to soak up some damage without being freaking immortal (see CoD:W@W) Also I have to welcome the glorious return to FPS gaming of the Jihad Jeep in the form of a Quad Bike.

Air Vehicles leave a little more to be desired, with the Apache feeling sluggish to fly, this is easily corrected with some hardware tweaks and upping some of the sensitivity options.

A few people have raised concerns about the speed of game play but at this point I should point out something;
The game type in the beta is called Rush. The idea being that a 64 player size map is split down into smaller close quarter fire fight sections and teams are given 2 objectives to focus on in each section.

Even these small sections don't spawn players 4 feet away from the enemy team as in CoD's comparatively tiny maps but also won't require a transatlantic aircraft to traverse like ArmA's continent.

Summary

This game is very much the decreasingly small middle ground in the world of FPS and it executes this incredibly well. Although there are some things yet to be seen such as how many maps there will be in the final, how other modes will play, etc. This is the most promising game for the clan I have seen since Battlefield 2, fitting that it should come from the same people. Even though it’s a Beta it’s still more functional and stable than MW2 and more accessible and a lot easier to pick up than Arma2. I think anyone writing off this game 3 days into the Beta needs to give themselves a nice long hot sauce enema...lighten up folks it’s a beta.

I'm really liking the game so far. It's not as fast pace as mw2, but it's sure as shit a lot faster than Arma. The speed of the battle depends on where you are on the battlefield. Squad play and teamwork are a very welcome return.

This is a limited beta. There is no need to snivel just because you didn't have a wet dream first impression. I remember it took me a solid month or more of playing BF2 before I really enjoyed it. The beta is on a mode I would guess we will rarely play on our servers. I have a feeling we were given a non spoiler map/ gametype for the beta. This is to test server connectivity, UI and load. There is also Hardcore in the final, something we generally play in our servers.

This is a beta! All of you should be looking to fix errors, not rank up. There is forums dedicated to the beta at EA and Combat Studios. If you find something wrong or would like to see changed that is the place to start. Generally they require people to be slightly more constructive with their posting than "not impressed".

Thanks Silent for a very good review.

My rig is a:
Win 7 Pro 64bit
Core i7 920
ASUS Rampage Extreme II
MSI 295GTX
6 Gig RAM

Running everything at MAX 1680 x1050 on a 24" monitor.
Video is great and sound is awesome, but very loud.

Most problems I have found is with server lag and problems.

Really impressed with the game.

I generally like the game so far. Besides having bullet drop and slightly better graphics it's no different than any other BF game. So if you like the BF series you'll like this, if you don't you won't.

I think the official release will have the graphics optimized, so everyone's FPS will get better. I'm currently running everthing on High and getting high 20's to mid 40's FPS.

Well then I shall apologize for my "not impressed" 2 cents.
Unfortunately I am not as intellectual of a reviewer or "constructive" as others are. I will wait for a true release of this and go from there.

This time I was not on the float in side. I went to a building- snipe. I was behind a building- nothing happened. So, I went around the building- snipe. I fired a rocket- hit the tank- some smoke happened- snipe. Then I road a 4 wheeler until someone shot me.

YA !!! I was SOOOO impressed with the BETA of this game.

I tried to get on the same server as everyone- but all I heard was "find it"- so, I gave up and played a game that I could last longer than Gladiator having sex!!! 4 seconds!!! ok, cheap shot, but seriously- spawn die, just isn't fun for me.

so, my review of the BETA is I hope the released game is better.

@ Sonj. We all gave you the server name multiple times and were quite clear about the fact that there were only 2 servers with this name and one had a password on it, we were in the other one.

When you stated that there were "hundreds" I pointed out that the one we were in had no prefixes unlike al the other ones that were similar in name but had EA Chicago etc at the begining.

Its not like we didn't what you to get in game and didnt try to help, which is the way you make it sound, every other person in the server had to connect in exactly the same way. Yes its not ideal but it is a beta its purpose is to test the actuall stability of servers, damage scaling and to get community feedback, the fine tuning will come in closer to release.

Unfortunately the experience you had with the snipers is unavoidable, show me an fps without sniper whores and ill give you a cookie. The nature of the Rush gametype on that particular map gives snipers an unfortunate piece of high ground with lots of cover, but with a little practice counter sniping becones incredibly easy, especially when you unlock tools like the mortar strike and the extended zoom scope.

One of the benifits of playing as a clan is that you can communicate things like this and people can pull some sneaky bollocks manouvers and knife the fuckers or just snipe them back. Yes its a pain to get in the same server at the moment and the server we were in didnt have the easiest name to spot (i spent 10 or so minutes trying to find it myself) but if u make it into the server with everyone its deffinately worth it and the game is much improved for it.

@Everyone

It is a closed beta test that you have been invited to play in FOR FREE because you pre-ordered...not because your special and not cause you paid more than anyone who goes and buys the limited edition on release day.

I completely agree that there are things in beta that, if included in a final release, would cause me to firebomb the nearest EA office but writing the game off so quickly based on a one gametype, one map, limited Beta is a little silly.

If there are individuals here that really believe that this is what the final is going to be like the I strongly advise them to cancel their preorder because even this turns out to be the greatest game of all time, if one tiny problem carries through from the beta they will let it ruin the whole thingfor them, and by extention anyone who has to listen to them whine about it.

but he doesn't agree... ;-)

Steam give refunds?

This is only a Beta.
Prone may make its way back in the final version.
Although without prone it does negate dolphin diving.
The pace is up to the players.
There is no defined time limit, just a ticket count.

BC2 has the features to be a really good tactical/squad game.

With the reduction of classes from six in BF2 to four in BC2 this makes for a very dynamic squad and thus great squad action.

BC2 is not the perfect game, but it is the best thing right now for squad type play.

Just my 2 cents.

ArmA 2? What type Cookies you got?

As for Bad Company I have no comments. And I do not plan on bad mouthing something I haven't played. Though this did occure with MW2 but there were other things in play there also. But Beta or not some people do seem rather more optomistic on the future ourcome than clinicly neutral.

But then since some are still looking for that pefect clan game, then HOPE may be all we have for the forseable future. But till it is discovered, well I guess I'll continue to play ArmA 2 with the few than can, will or want to.

But I raise my beer in a toast to theFuture Perfect Clan Game.
